Some Icelandics are natural tolters; others need schooling. (Artificial shoeing and training devices are barred). Some also pace at speeds up to 35 mph. Characteristics: 12 to 14.2 hands high (13.2 hands average); solidly built, with the body and stride of a bigger horse (they easily carry adult riders); head carried proudly; full mane and tail; almost all colors, including pinto and silver dapple (but no Appaloosa markings); consistent temperament; rarely skittish. Where Found: Only about 1,100 currently registered in United States, mostly on the East and West coasts.
Uses: Trail riding; endurance riding; therapeutic riding programs; shows; exhibitions; parades.
