Welcome to our gaited horse information page on the Spanish Gaited Pony gaited horse breed. At this time we invite everyone to submit their information and history of this particular breed. Please come back frequently and visit us as we expand and update this site! We want this gaited horse website to be the gaited horse information site for all readers. The Spanish Gaited PonyIn 1983 near Tacoma, in the State of Washington, Larry and Shirley Davidson stated developing the Spanish Gaited Pony breed. Twelve small bay colored and very refined pony mares were selected for this purpose. After searching all over the Northwestern states, without results, the mares were bought mostly in the Midwestern states because of the greater selection available there. All the mares were bred to a champion Peruvian Paso stallion standing 14.2 hands tall. Later on a beautiful bay Paso Fino stallion's blood was added. The goal was to produce a gaited pony with a four beat gait for a super smooth ride, lots of refinement, a good disposition with plenty of life and energy all, in a package 11 to 13 hands tall. Six years starting the breeding program, the Davidsons and all their ponies moved to the Central coast of California in San Francisco Obispo County and continued the line breeding program that was producing even better than expected results in bringing out the smooth four beat gait. Now the original stallions and mares are gone and their great grand sons and daughters are carrying on the breed. The fourth and fifth generation foals are arriving this spring and new born babies gaiting naturally in the pasture beside their mothers, bring smiles to the faces of all who see them. the total number of ponies now is about 40 head and rapidly growing. The only ponies sold through the years were geldings and ponies that did not meet breed standards. They were not registered or sold as breeding stock. The advertising campaign has now started to make people aware of the Spanish Gaited Pony breed and registry. |
